2020 Fauno Red Blend

When a group of sommeliers get together (on an international scale), taste hundreds of wines…and hand-pick only a few, select standouts? You know you’re on to something special. Enter: Fauno, which proudly sports a 92-point gold medal from the 2021 Sommelier Challenge. Named for a mythical faun that Valencians believe watches over the harvest, it’s a blend of Garnacha (aka Grenache), Shiraz (aka Syrah), and Monastrell (aka Mourvèdre)—a triumvirate of grapes affectionately known in wine circles as a “GSM.” It’s common to see in France’s Rhône Valley, but here on Spain’s Mediterranean coast, things get even richer, thanks to sun-drenched vineyards and cool sea breezes. Gently aged in American oak casks—adding a subtly sweet-n-toasty vanilla tone to the wine’s luscious black raspberry, blackberry, and strawberry characters—this is a full-bodied and intense red that’s ready for a hearty meal. Enjoy with garlicky grilled steaks, semi-firm cheeses (we love aged Mahón), or braised lamb shanks.
