16 years. Double Cask Matured. Aberlour — a Speyside single malt matured in a combination of first-fill bourbon barrels and first-fill sherry casks for 16 years at the Aberlour Distillery on the banks of the River Lour, where the confluence of the Lour and Spey rivers provides the soft, mineral-rich water that defines the house style.
Aberlour Distillery was founded in 1879 in the village of Charlestown of Aberlour in the heart of Speyside, and the distillery's proximity to two rivers — the Lour and the Spey — has always shaped its character. The double cask maturation program balances American oak's vanilla and fruit with European sherry oak's richness and spice, a philosophy that runs across the entire Aberlour range.
At 16 years, the double cask maturation has produced a whisky that San Francisco World Spirits Competition awarded Double Gold medals in 2011 and 2012 — recognition of the balance between the bourbon cask's soft fruit and the sherry cask's richness at this maturation point.

Aberlour produces a naturally rich, full-bodied Speyside spirit that carries sherry cask influence exceptionally well. The distillery's soft river water and long fermentation times produce a spirit with natural sweetness and weight that amplifies rather than competes with cask maturation.
The 16 Year uses double cask maturation for balanced bourbon/sherry complexity. The 18 Year uses exclusively sherry-seasoned casks for a more intensely sherried profile. Two additional years and a single-cask-type approach make the 18 Year richer and more sherry-dominant.
