Bernheim Original Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey was introduced in 2005 by Heaven Hill Distillery as the first genuinely new American whiskey style since Prohibition — a category-defining departure from bourbon and rye in which soft winter wheat serves as the primary grain rather than corn or rye. Two decades on, this 20th Anniversary Limited Edition commemorates that founding innovation with a specially selected batch of barrels drawn from Heaven Hill's aging inventory across more than 70 rickhouses in Nelson and Jefferson Counties, Kentucky. The Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, where the spirit is produced, operates within one of the largest aging inventories of American whiskey in the world — a resource that gives the production team access to exceptional aged stock for releases of this significance.

The 20th Anniversary expression is built from the same soft winter wheat mashbill that defines the standard Bernheim range, but extends the maturation to ten years — three years beyond the flagship seven-year expression — in new charred American white oak barrels aged in Kentucky's continental climate, where seasonal temperature extremes drive an active and compounding cycle of wood extraction. The selected barrels are bottled at full barrel strength of 115 proof without chill filtration, a decision that preserves the full concentration of compounds developed during a decade in wood and presents the whiskey at the intensity the extended aging has produced. The commemorative bottle features a distinctive copper plate on the front, a material and visual reference to the craft heritage behind the release.

The nose opens with cinnamon and baking spice layered over vanilla and toasted oak, with a dark honey depth that ten years in barrel and barrel-proof bottling make possible. The palate is deceptively soft on entry given the proof — honeyed wheat and butterscotch give way to molasses, roasted oak, and bittersweet chocolate at the mid-palate, reflecting the accumulated wood influence of the full decade. The finish is long and peppery, with warmth and balance that lingers well past the close — a testament to the wheat mashbill's capacity to carry extended oak maturation without hardening into the sharpness that rye-forward whiskeys can develop at age.
