Sítio Maranhão is a three-hectare family farm in Caldas, Brazil, founded by Edivair and Luciane de Carvalho in 2008. Though small by Brazilian standards, the farm’s high elevation, volcanic soils, and mild climate provide ideal conditions for producing exceptional coffee.
The de Carvalhos carefully manage every stage of production, from harvesting and cherry selection through processing and drying. Cherries are harvested by hand or with gentle mechanical shaker arms, and all of their coffees are processed naturally, drying intact in the fruit around the seed.
Their dedication to quality earned first place in the 2021 Especialíssimo Program, a specialty coffee competition organized by SMC Exporters. The recognition inspired further investment in the farm, including raised drying beds to refine their processing.
When we visited in 2024, Edivair and Luciane asked us to walk around the drying patio to avoid contaminating the coffee—a small gesture that spoke volumes about their care and pride. That meticulous attention to detail continues to define the exceptional coffees of Sítio Maranhão.
