Cruz de Fuego Cirial is a wild-harvested artisanal mezcal from Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, made by Margarita Blas and Carlos Mendez under the Productores del Buen Agave banner. Cirial is a rare, semi-wild agave varietal sometimes considered closely related to or a subtype of Karwinskii — producing one of the more distinctive and less common single-varietal mezcal expressions.
Wild varietal mezcals like Cirial are produced in much smaller quantities than cultivated Espadin, with the wild plants taking longer to mature and producing more concentrated, often more elegant character. Cruz de Fuego’s fully traditional production — earthen oven, stone tahona, wood-fermented, copper pot still double-distilled — preserves the distinctive varietal character.
