Why is Monkey Shoulder called Monkey Shoulder you ask? Well, in the traditional malt whisky making process, malted barley is turned by hand by malt men using large heavy malt shovels. Years ago, some malt men would develop a strain injury which had a tendency to cause their arm to hang down a bit like a monkey's, so they nicknamed it 'monkey shoulder'. Thankfully, the condition no longer exists but we're still proud to honour our whisky heritage.
Nose: Crisp, clear malty grains, zesty orange meets mellow vanilla, honey and spiced oak. After a rest in the glass, there is a heavy layer of vanilla extract.
Palate: Mellow vanilla with spicy hints and a wave of lemon peel and caramel accompanied by slight tongue burn. Nougat and vanilla frosting.
Finish: Super smooth and short. Nutty and sweet but quickly vanishing with a fading hint of dry oaky tannins and a bit of charcoal.
