Mortlach 12 Year The Wee Witchie is the entry expression from one of Speyside’s most unusual and celebrated distilleries — Mortlach in Dufftown, known for its exceptionally complex ‘meaty’ and robust spirit produced by a unique 2.81-times partial distillation process using six differently shaped stills.

Mortlach’s production process involves partially distilling spirit three times through the worm tub condensers using a complex combination of its six stills — no other Scottish distillery uses the same configuration. The result is a heavy, full-bodied, and sulphurous new make spirit that produces a distinctively rich and savoury finished whisky unlike any other Speyside expression. At 12 years this character is already well-developed. Browse all Scotch whisky at Wooden Cork.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does ‘meaty’ mean in whisky tasting notes?

In whisky tasting the term ‘meaty’ describes a rich, savoury, sulphur-influenced character that goes beyond fruit and wood — often described as beef bouillon, umami, or dark chocolate. In Mortlach’s case it comes from the heavy, complex spirit produced by the worm tub condensers and partial triple distillation, which retains more congeners than standard Speyside production.

What does Wee Witchie mean?

The Wee Witchie is the nickname given to Mortlach’s smallest still — one of six differently shaped stills in the distillery’s unique production configuration. The name acknowledges this small but characterful still as the namesake of the entry expression.
