In 1918, Masataka Taketsuru embarked alone on a long voyage to Scotland where he enrolled at the University of Glasgow and became the first Japanese ever to study the art of whisky making. He later returned and became the first Master Distiller for the Suntory corporation where he aspired to make genuine whisky from Japan. After over a decade of crafting whisky, he established Nikka and built a distillery in Yoichi, Hokkaido. in 1969, another distillery was added in Miyagikyo.
A blend of the two Nikka single malts, Taketsuru combines the strong character of Yoichi with the elegance and precision of Miyagikyo. Stored and matured for 12 years or more in oak casks, the Taketsuru 12 year is characterized by a rich nose and a mellow, well-balanced malt palate and a clean finish.
Nikka Taketsuru 12 Year Old Japanese Pure Malt Whisky earned the Gold Medal at the International Spirits Challenge and a score of 93 points from Wine Enthusiast.
