Pusser's Rum Gunpowder Proof. Pusser's Rum Ltd., Guyana & Trinidad — the overproof expression of the original Royal Navy Admiralty blend, produced at original Admiralty strength in accordance with the blending recipe last used before the Royal Navy discontinued its daily tot on 31 July 1970, delivering a full-bodied rum with pungent molasses, treacle, toffee, honey, and vanilla alongside oak, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger with a long, smooth, mellow finish despite its elevated proof.
The name "Gunpowder Proof" comes from the Royal Navy's pre-hydrometer method of testing rum strength: the ship's Pusser (Purser) would pour a small amount of the sailors' daily rum ration onto a measure of gunpowder and attempt to ignite it. If the mixture burned, the rum was "at proof" — strong enough for the gunpowder to ignite. If it didn't, the rum had been watered down, and the Pusser responsible might find himself thrown overboard. The test corresponded to approximately 57% ABV (100 proof on the old British system), which is the strength of the Gunpowder Proof expression today.
Pusser's received permission in 1979 to produce the original Admiralty blend commercially after the 1970 discontinuation of the naval rum ration. The Guyanese Demerara component brings the characteristic heavy pot still aromatics — molasses, treacle, marmalade, tobacco — while the Trinidadian column still rum provides refinement and balance. At Gunpowder Proof strength, the full depth of the Admiralty blend is expressed at its most complete.
