Ron Abuelo Anejo 12 Year Rum. Varela Hermanos, Pesé Valley, Panama — a brown rum distilled from fermented molasses and aged 12 years in used whisky and bourbon barrels, delivering vanilla, toffee, and baked fruit in the body that leads to a smooth, dry, smoky finish — the elegance of Panama in a bottle.
Ron Abuelo ("Grandfather Rum") is produced by Varela Hermanos, a family-owned operation in the Pesé Valley of Herrera Province — one of Panama's most fertile agricultural regions, where the family has farmed sugarcane and produced rum since 1936. Like all quality Panamanian rums, Ron Abuelo is built on the Spanish-style column still tradition: a clean, refined distillate that aging transforms rather than a heavily estered pot still base that simply mellows over time.
The 12 Year (Anejo 12) uses used whisky and bourbon barrels — previously occupied casks that have surrendered their most aggressive wood flavors to an earlier spirit, leaving a gentler influence that allows the rum's inherent Panamanian character to develop without being dominated by fresh oak extraction. Twelve years in the tropical Panamanian climate creates genuine depth: the vanilla, toffee, and baked fruit that distinguish the Anejo 12 from younger expressions, and the smooth, dry, smoky finish that reflects both the quality of the barrel selection and the extended tropical maturation.
