Tosba Mezcal Espadin is an artisanal mezcal from the Sierra Norte (Sierra Juarez) mountains of far northern Oaxaca, near Veracruz — created by cousins Edgar Gonzalez Ramirez and Elisandro Gonzalez Molina, who launched Tosba (Zapotec for “only one”) because they were the only active mezcaleros in their community of San Cristobal Lachirioag when they started. Espadin (Agave angustifolia) is the foundational cultivated agave in mezcal production.
Tosba is unique in Oaxacan mezcal for both its geography (Sierra Norte rather than the more famous Sierra Sur of Santiago Matatlán) and its sustainability ethos. The cousins plant significantly more agave than they harvest, grow predominantly from seed (with hundreds of thousands of plants in nursery), use driftwood and sustainable biomass like peat moss to combat deforestation, and complete every step locally and by hand. The Espadin expression presents Tosba’s northern Oaxacan terroir within the standard cultivated varietal.
